In Provence, all known apiaries (called apiès) are of dry stone, cut into large, flat slabs called lauzes.
These niches or logettes are either small to accommodate individual hives, or large, in which case the hives are housed side by side, mainly to protect them from heat or bad weather (wind, rain, etc.) or from certain predators.
A Cuers, 25 very well preserved dry stone hives from the 18th century; the ruins of an old hamlet with a threshing floor and an ice house can also be seen.
