Anchored to a fertile plain planted with vines, Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume is a large, Provencal market town, winding around a magnificent Basilica, considered as Provence's finest Gothic building.
According to legend, this is where the relics of Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Maximin were buried in the 1st century AD. The Basilica was erected above the crypt where their tombs were sheltered. Saint-Maximin remains a major place of pilgrimage.
