The crest circuit takes in the small plage du Sud, the islet of La Gabinière and the steep landscapes of the south coast, where the sea sometimes breaks loose during mistral storms, in striking contrast to the calm of the Vallon de la Solitude. Most of the route is shaded (obtain or download the brochure "La faune insulaire" from the National Park House).
From the port, turn right towards Plage du Sud. See the charming little St Tropez chapel on the left. Continue along the seafront past Hélène's former manor house, now a hotel, to the steps at the foot of the statue of St Joseph. Take the path on the right towards Pomme d'Or. Cross Anse de la Fausse-Monnaie, then Plage du Sud. After rounding a ruined building (Antinéa), a fork appears, indicating Pointe du Cognet on the right: the short detour (20 min. AR) is well worth it. The view of the entire south coast of the island is truly superb. Retrace your steps to catch up with the Crêtes trail on the right. It climbs steeply to reach Mont Vinaigre (194 m), the island's highest point. A fine vantage point overlooking the south coast and the islet of La Gabinière, well known to divers. It's one of the most beautiful dive sites in the Var and even the region. You can shorten the walk by taking the Pomme d'Or path, which descends rapidly towards the village. Alternatively, continue along the well-shaded ridge path to the second intersection. Turn left into the Vallon de la Solitude and tackle the long, steep descent to the dam. Follow the dam to the left, pass the Maison aux Vaches and descend gently to the port.
