Varages

Varages

Varages stands on a rocky travertine spur with a river below it, and is located on a large deposit of pottery clay. It is easy to guess the resulting activity in the village. The large welcoming square in the centre and the park with its centuries-old plane trees provide cool and relaxing areas for visitors who come here to buy dishes and other gifts.

Presentation

Clinging to a tuff cliff overlooking a river, Varages is naturally blessed with large clay deposits which, coupled with an abundant water supply, allowed the village to develop a thriving earthenware industry that prospered for several centuries. Earthenware from Varages is still exported throughout the world. The village is home to a small earthenware museum and many artists' studios.
