Whether given in honour of a patron saint or simply organised to celebrate the cycle of the seasons and the harvest, whether pagan or religious in origin, the festivals of the Var perpetuate a very long tradition of conviviality specific to the people of Provence and the Mediterranean. They are the original manifestation of a popular expression that, through rituals and customs, affirms the identity of each village.
Mardi Gras and its flower-filled corsos, the spring revival with its garlanded May trees, the Saint-Jean bonfires to celebrate the arrival of summer, Saint-Pierre to celebrate fishermen, Saint-Eloi and his turbaned horse-drawn carriages, the oursinades, the chestnut, fig, cherry and olive festivals, the bravades, the romérages, the magic of Christmas in Provence?
