- emblematic 20th-century buildings to discover an unsuspected facet of the Var's history;
- contemporary art, because there's so much to see in the Var!
Built for Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles by the architect Rob. Mallet-Stevens, its construction took place between 1923 and 1933. It applies the founding precepts of the modern movement: functionality, purification of decorative elements, terraces, light, hygiene, etc
Built in Hyères, an emblematic port town on the Côte d'Azur, the Villa Noailles called on an impressive list of artists for its decoration:
Originally, the small cubist garden in the shape of an isosceles triangle, located in line with the living room door, alternated squares of water and plants. A checkerboard of coloured ceramics ended at the point of the triangle with a jet of water and an animated statue of Lipchitz, "la joie de vivre". These elements have now disappeared. On the sides of the villa's garden, triangular tubs descended in a zig-zag pattern, and large planters combined in optical effects to accentuate the perspective.
Quickly damaged by the elements, it had already been simplified and planted with agaves by 1933, and eventually disappeared. It was restored in 1986.
A landmark of modernism, the Villa Noailles in Hyères is now an art centre. A permanent exhibition is devoted to its patrons, Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles. Temporary exhibitions, conferences and children's workshops on fashion, design, photography and architecture complete the programme. Two international festivals are held here every year: the International Festival of Fashion and Photography in spring and the Design Parade in summer.
From prestigious families, Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles married in 1923. Collectors and lovers of modernity, with a love of risk and novelty, they devoted part of their lives to supporting creation and thought in every way possible.
