A Village of Character in the Var
Nestling at the foot of an impressive tufa rock whose caves have served as a refuge for its inhabitants many times, Cotignac is a lively, authentic Provencal village with arts and crafts, a market, local produce and, in summer, a very fine theatre and film festival..
After a visit to the caves, which offer a beautiful panoramic view over the rooftops of the village, you can stroll along the pretty Cours Gambetta, in the shade of century-old plane trees refreshed by two beautiful fountains. It's a pleasant place to linger, sitting outside one of the cafés or restaurants, or wandering through the picturesque old streets framed by tall ochre-coloured houses. Labelled a "Village de Caractère du Var", Cotignac is a charming place!
A rich history and preserved architecture
Cotignac was marked by the apparitions of the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus and of Saint Joseph in the 16th century. The sanctuary of Notre Dame de Grâces was built to commemorate these apparitions. The shrine is also a place steeped in history. In 1660, Louis XIV came here in the company of his mother, Anne of Austria, to give thanks for his birth. The king had a black marble ex-voto placed inside the sanctuary chapel, which can still be seen today. A major place of pilgrimage, the sanctuary of Notre Dame de Grâces is now a member of the network of Sanctuary Towns in France.
