The Musée des Gueules Rouges (Red faces museum) tells the story of bauxite mining in the Var region and of the men who worked in appalling conditions and returned home covered in red dust, hence the name « Gueules Rouges » (Red faces).
The Gueules Rouges museum is also a scientific and technical museum. It presents the geological origins of bauxite, as well as the industrial processes involved in transforming this ore into alumina and then aluminium. Finally, it highlights the many contemporary uses of bauxite (transport, architecture, design, sport, etc.) through an original display of aluminium objects. Take a tour of the exhibition rooms and you'll learn all about the bauxite and aluminium mines of the Var! You'll find out how bauxite was mined and used, as well as a wealth of historical evidence. The Gueules Rouges museum will take you on a tour of this sometimes little-known past.
