Where to go on a yacht charter in the Var: between the creeks, coastline and islands of the Var

The Var is the ideal place for coastal sailing. Coves, beaches, islands and shelters offer landscapes as varied as they are admirable!

The escape begins as soon as you climb aboard your yacht for a weekend on the waters of the Var. There are so many options, all of them enchanting! From east to west along the Var coast, we can recommend a few tours with unforgettable memories:

  • The red rocks of l'Estérel falling into the turquoise water. Stop-offs not to be missed: Agay, Le Dramont, the Golden Island - which Hergé is said to have referred to when illustrating and writing his "Black Island". A stopover in Saint-Raphaël at the Port Santa-Lucia is an interesting way to organise a trip into town!
  • The Saint-Tropez peninsula with its beaches and capes - Camarat, Taillat and Lardier - all 3 of undisputed beauty. Magnificent views of the inland peaks and sumptuous properties!
  • The "wild" coast from Le Rayol-Canadel to Bormes-les-Mimosas, via Cap Nègre and Cap Bénat with views of the Hyères islands. This is one of the most natural and exotic parts of the Var coast. Along the way, you'll also have the chance to see the not-to-be-missed Brégançon fort!

The islands of Hyères - Le Levant, Port-Cros and Porquerolles - heart of the Port-Cros National Park: we recommend sailing in the off-season (May/June and September/October or even November) to make the most of this exceptional archipelago, which forms the southernmost tip of Provence (same latitude as Cap Corse). Porquerolles and Port-Cros are surrounded by forts dating from the Vauban era, a reminder of the strategic importance of these islands during the conquests of the sea and territory.

Continuation of the route: from Hyères to Saint-Cyr sur mer, the west of the Var coast.

  • The Hyère roadstead, the Giens peninsula and the Almanarre roadstead: at the end of the Giens peninsula, you'll feel like you're at the end of the world, and as you pass the Almanarre roadstead, you'll find yourself back in the world of surfing.
  • Cap Garonne and the Toulon roadstead: this too is a typical environment, with cliffs and small hillside villages tumbling down into the sea (Pin de Galle, San Peyre and Magot). The Toulon harbour is considered by the locals to be the most beautiful in Europe, and is well worth a visit with its military port and the small bays that surround it, notably the Baie de Tamaris at La Seyne-sur-Mer, home to several fish farms and oyster and mussel farms. Opposite, closing in on the harbour, is the Saint-Mandrier peninsula and its small port, a charming stopover that we recommend.
  • The coast from Six-Fours to Saint-Cyr via Bandol. As the wind blows, some superb ports of call await you, with their enchanting names: the Gaou islands, the Embiez island acquired by Paul Ricard in 1958, the island of Bendor and the Portissol, Cride and Tourette headlands, Moutte bay and the Port d'Alon cove. This pretty cove will be your first introduction to the limestone landscapes that you can discover as you continue your journey to the Cassis coves: the perfect marriage of white, green and blue!

The Var coastline, with its creeks, islands and roadsides, is without doubt one of the best sailing areas in the world!

Sailing and sustainable development

There's nothing like a sailboat to make you aware of the richness and vulnerability of our terrestrial and marine environment, and the importance of protecting it so that you can enjoy and share it in peace.

Your actions will very quickly be transformed into eco-actions for good management of life on board and for the essential relationship that you will have with the marine world closer to you.

You'll be careful with your rubbish and the noise you emit (silence at sea is punctuated by the sounds of the sea!), and you'll choose your moorings carefully to avoid disturbing the marine fauna and flora, so you can enjoy the sea and coastline even more.

More and more administrative institutions, municipalities and inter-communal bodies, concerned about preserving their heritage, are installing mooring buoys to prevent unauthorised anchoring, which destroys the seabed. Don't hesitate to use them! And if by any chance you don't find these facilities, don't just drop your anchor anywhere! Always remember to anchor in the sand and avoid the posidonia fields at all costs. These meadows arenot only a place where many fish live and feed, but also a place to lay their eggs and a nursery.

Yacht clubs: learn to sail alongside enthusiasts

Yacht club or sailing club... There are nevertheless some historical differences in the names used for these clubs, depending on the use of the boats and the selection of their members. Here is a summary of the activities and services on offer:

Since the20thcentury, yacht clubs (or yacht clubs or sailing clubs) have opened up to non-members because of the need for diversification and communication with the outside world. By contacting them, you can

  • Take part in coastal and offshore regattas.
  • Take part in themed sailing trips.
  • Take sailing lessons on different types of craft.
  • Take courses on live-aboard sailing to acquire the necessary manoeuvring skills and consider setting off on your own on a sailboat!
  • Hire a berth if you have a sailboat, although not all yacht clubs offer berths.
  • Take advantage of the crew exchange if you're looking for partners to organise a sea crossing.
  • Spend some time in the clubhouse, a great place to meet up and have a good time: regatta organisation meetings, outings at sea, lunches and so on.

The yacht club / sailing club is an important place in the world of sailing, bringing together people from different social and geographical backgrounds with the same spirit of openness, sharing knowledge and conviviality. We recommend that you get in touch with a yacht club to find out more about the world of sailing.
