The Var, 13 waymarked underwater trails to discover the rich biodiversity of the coastal seabed in France’s No. 1 marine destination.
At very shallow depths, or even on the surface, with just a mask, snorkel and flippers, you can explore the Mediterranean seabed. A veritable fairytale world, populated by fish, crustaceans, starfish, sea urchins, posidonia meadows... and even archaeological remains!
These underwater trails, most of which are open from June to September, are signposted: buoys anchored to the seabed support submerged information panels that can be read either from the surface or underwater.
You can take these aquatic walks on your own or under the supervision of professional instructors or on-site eco-guides.

A beautiful little beach in the commune of La Garde, near Toulon, which has retained an authenticity much appreciated by the locals. The site features an underwater trail, which can be explored on your own or accompanied by a qualified instructor, withan exceptional natural panorama of the Toulon harbour.
Certainly the most impressive and best-known of the underwater trails in the Port-Cros National Park. Here you'll discover an extremely rich marine biodiversity, with always some very fine specimens to be seen: groupers, castagnoles, green wrasses, sars, saupes, sea urchins, girelles ... and so many other fish wandering among the rich flora. The seabed offers an exceptional range of scenery, with posidonia meadows on a sandy seabed, small rocky seabeds, drop-offs and other faults... this underwater trail is a particularly interesting playground, making it one of the National Park's must-sees.
Come and discover theancient Roman quay of Olbia and thewreck of a Tartane, now home to endemic flora and fauna. You can also see a fossil beach colonised by sea anemones.
Facing the islands of Porquerolles and Port-Cros, located at the tip of the Argentière beach, the Jardin des Mattes trail is a great way to discover the coastal underwater world. Supervised outings explain the importance of the Posidonia meadows, which are a veritable nursery for fish.
The trail is located in the centre of the"Corniche Varoise" marine protected area, on the exceptional site of Cap Lardier. It offers an easily accessible glimpse of the underwater landscapes of the Mediterranean Sea. It's ideal for a family snorkelling trip on your holiday in the Var!
At the end of Pampelonne beach, heading towards Cap Camarat, an underwater trail has been laid out, enabling visitors to discover the rich posidonia of the seabed in this area.
