These are the ' weeds ' at the bottom of the sea that tickle our feet, that many people avoid when swimming and that some people don't like because they give the water a dark colour. It is also found on the edges of beaches, brown once dried, laid out in thick mats at the water's edge. For some, this makes the beach look "dirty"... On the contrary, posidonia is a sign of healthy water, and there's nothing more natural than that! Posidonia is a marine plant (not algae) that is very fragile and sensitive to pollution. It is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea.
The Posidonia meadow is an essential ecosystem for marine life. It is the lungs of the Mediterranean, a veritable nursery and habitat. As a swell attenuator and a brake on marine currents, it protects and limits the retreat of the coastline. Posidonia retreats over the years. The beautiful turquoise colour of the water is due to the sandy seabed. Sometimes this is natural, sometimes it means that the Posidonia has disappeared. It is essential to protect it. In certain areas, for example, it is forbidden for boats to drop anchor or for bathers to cross. Preserving the seagrass is everyone's business.
To enjoy the beach in a different way, don't hesitate to take a seat in one of the many beach restaurants, where you can enjoy a delicious meal with your feet in the water! (or almost...)
Most of them also offer deckchair hire, and sometimes paddle and pedalo hire too...
And the good news is that aperitifs can also be enjoyed on the beach...
