Fishing in the Mediterranean in the Var

The different fishing techniques :

Underwater hunting:

This type of fishing is done underwater using a harpoon gun, and is not open to under-16s because it is so dangerous. Everyone is also required to have third-party insurance. However, it's a good idea to find out where sea fishing is prohibited or restricted at certain times of the year.

Some species, such as octopus, bluefin tuna and swordfish, are subject to special fishing conditions depending on the season. Corb and grouper are protected species and fishing for them is strictly prohibited.

Sea urchin fishing season

In the Var, but also in the Bouches-du-Rhône and Alpes-Maritimes departments, sea urchin hunting is eagerly awaited. Hunting isonly authorised from November 1 to April 15 by order of the prefect of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The quantities collected are also limited per day and per person.

Outside this period, sea urchin fishing is prohibited to protect the species.
