Recreational fishing is enjoyed by many enthusiasts, but there are a few rules that must be observed to protect the environment and marine flora and fauna. In particular, all anglers are asked to :

Respect the presence of other boats, divers and other equipment in the maritime area.
Pick up any rubbish and replace any natural elements that have been displaced so as not to pollute the sea.
Not to resell any fish caught (fish caught are for personal consumption only).

Fishing in the Mediterranean in the Var

The different fishing techniques :

Underwater hunting:

This type of fishing is done underwater using a harpoon gun, and is not open to under-16s because it is so dangerous. Everyone is also required to have third-party insurance. Foot fishing along the beaches:

This popular practice of gathering shellfish from rocks or beaches is regulated! You should therefore find out which areas prohibit or accept this type of fishing, as well as the sizes and quantities of catches.

Ready to go sea fishing? If you're interested in sea fishing on the Var coast, you can use theLe Comptoir des Pêcheursplatform , which lists the various fishing spots available in the Var and throughout France .

However, it's a good idea to find out where sea fishing is prohibited or restricted at certain times of the year.

Some species, such as octopus, bluefin tuna and swordfish, are subject to special fishing conditions depending on the season. Corb and grouper are protected species and fishing for them is strictly prohibited.

Sea urchin fishing season

In the Var, but also in the Bouches-du-Rhône and Alpes-Maritimes departments, sea urchin hunting is eagerly awaited. Hunting isonly authorised from November 1 to April 15 by order of the prefect of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The quantities collected are also limited per day and per person.

Outside this period, sea urchin fishing is prohibited to protect the species.
